Questions about New Media Art.

1. Dada and new media art both described as reactions. What did they react to?

Dada was a reaction to the industrialization of warfare and the mechanical reproduction of texts and images. New media art reacted to the information technology revolution and the digitization of cultural forms.


2. What are some similarities of new media art to Dada, Pop art and Video art?


Dada: the provocative use of irony and absurdity, involving blank appropriation, blurred the boundaries between art and political action


Pop art: Engaged with commercial culture


Video art: Saw the portable video camera (Internet for New media artists) as an accessible artistic tool that enable them to explore the changing relationship between technology



3. When was net art first included in a major exhibition: Documenta X?


In 1997, net art was first included in the exhibition , Documenta X.



4. Does new media art focus in one country? Why or why not?


New media art does not focus in one country, but doing so globally, which is worldwide movement. Due to the close connection to the internet, the formation of communities became available despite geographical barrier. Technology advancement(especially the Internet) facilitated the exchange of information between nations, for example, email lists and web sites served as alternative channels for the discussion, promotion, exhibition and reforming a global art world.


5. Why were many artists drawn to new media art from other disciplines? 


Owing to the globalization and widespread use of the Internet, new media art became more accessible.  Advances in personal computing hardware and software let the young artists being grown up with personal computers and videos, which are the basic media of new media art. And they are more comfortable to work with new media than those conventional art form.
